Alcoa Foundation Awarding $82,000 To First-Time Wheelchair Athletes

Do you want to attend the veterans wheelchair games? If you reside in Indiana, Iowa, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, and the District of Columbia you are eligible to apply.

The Alcoa Foundation is graciously offering grants for 31 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts who reside in Indiana, Iowa, Texas, Michigan, Ohio or the District of Columbia to attend the Wheelchair Games for the first time. The grant is being offered on a first-come, first-served basis as funds permit to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), or Operation New Dawn (OND) veterans injured in or out of theater during the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts.

Alcoa employees support troops and veterans through community-based events and activities organized at locations throughout the United States. “We are proud to partner with the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Department of Veterans Affairs to support the Games and are excited to cheer on and celebrate the extraordinary men and women who will come together to compete in Alcoa’s hometown,” said Alcoa Foundation president, Paula Davis.

Each eligible participant may receive up to $2,000 for travel and hotel costs to attend the Games, the largest annual wheelchair sporting event in the world. In addition, each participant will be eligible for up to $2,000 to cover travel and hotel expenses for one spouse or companion to attend the games with them.

“Participating in sports and recreation at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games are an integral part of rehabilitation for our injured and disabled veterans,” said Bill Lawson, national president of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. “Thanks to these generous grants from our National Host Sponsor, the Alcoa Foundation, 31 veterans will get a chance to attend, participate in and experience the Games at their best.”

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

•Must be a first-time attendee

•Must be an honorably discharged veteran or still on active duty

•Must use a wheelchair to participate in sporting activities

•Must have been injured during the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts—in or out of theater
